In many European countries, the USA and Japan, abortion is available on request. In other nations, such as Britain, abortion laws are more restrictive. In the Arab states and Latin America abortion is illegal. Feminists claim that women will not be liberated until they have legal access to medical assistance for an abortion (Warren, 1980). The availability of legal abortion, therefore, is an indication of how far a nation’s health-care system is ‘woman-friendly’. Some researchers have suggested, however, that feminist debates about abortion are ETHNOCENTRIC (see Osman, 1983).

Females can only have a limited number of children, so the best reproductive strategy is to get men to become useful providers – a strategy believed to be genetically based and to include remaining sexually attractive and so on. Males, on the other hand, are likely to maximise the numbers of their descendants by spreading their seed around, gambling on at least some children growing up. The female strategy calls for commitment, the male strategy for sexual freedom – for males. Thus both the ‘double standard’ and women’s primary responsibility for CHILDCARE are seen by ‘strong’ sociobiologists as biologically determined aspects of CULTURE.

However, with the growing interest in the late 1980s and 1990s in IDENTITY POLITICS more generally, there has been a debate about the similarities and differences between what North American feminists refer to as ‘women of colour’. In the USA, for example, the work of Chicana feminists, including Gloria Anzaldúa (1987), has drawn attention to the MARGINAL position of Latina women, which has both parallels with and differences from African American women’s struggles. In Britain, the influence of POST-COLONIAL theorists has been important in the development of work on Asian women, both in Britain and in the Indian subcontinent (Brah, 1996).
