In The Enchanted Castle we are more concerned with the inner world of the spirit, than with the outer world of objects and doings. This is symbolised by the story being in the house and its hidden gardens: all Nesbit’s subsequent books 45 THE LONG IDYLL: 19001950 are set in and around houses also. A strange girl met by the children, who have happened on the castle, tells them that she is a princess, and they believe her, until they realise that she lives partly in a fantasy world of her own. Yet the notion of her as a princess never quite goes away, and the boundaries of fiction and reality overlap.

All this is not unlike a child making its first ignorant forays into a world of boiling pans, electric sockets, fragile ornaments and muddy ponds. After the risk and the escape, there is domestic retreat. Peter Rabbit and Tom Kitten are sent to bed, Jemima Puddleduck goes back to the farm to lay her 42 THE LONG IDYLL: 19001950 eggs, Pigling Bland just escapes back across the county boundary, the town and country mice return happily to their own territories, Jeremy Fisher resolves not to go fishing again, Mrs Tittlemouse shuts out Mr Jackson from further invasion of her house, the Flopsy Bunnies run home.

But we find quite the opposite in his Prince Prigio (1889) and Prince Ricardo of Pantouflia (1893), for both are set in magic realms, where the marvellous and the faery reign supreme. Indeed one of the central issues of Prince Prigio is belief in fairies and magic, at first foolishly scorned by the over-educated Prigio. ’47 With Prince Prigio and Prince Ricardo, we enter a charmed-circle world of fun and magic. Both are indebted to Thackeray’s The Rose and the Ring, which Lang inverts in Prince Prigio , by having Prigio over- rather than under-educated.
